Dhaka, June 20 (V7N) — A large cache of firearms and ammunition was discovered in an abandoned condition late Wednesday night behind the 14-storey slum in Pallabi, Dhaka. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) made the recovery based on a tip-off, according to an official press release issued Thursday night.
The arms and ammunition were reportedly found under a garbage heap near the Kalshi steel bridge, located just behind the slum area. DB officials from the Wari Division conducted the operation around 11:45 p.m., recovering the weapons without any resistance or suspects present at the scene.
Items Recovered:
According to the DMP statement, the following items were recovered:
-
2 foreign-made shotguns
-
1 foreign-made pistol
-
2 magazines
-
50 rounds of live pistol ammunition
-
310 shotgun pellets (cartridges)
Authorities stated that all items were found abandoned and no individuals were apprehended during the recovery.
Investigation Underway:
The DMP has confirmed that legal proceedings are currently underway, and efforts are being made to determine the origin of the weapons and whether they were intended for use in criminal activity. The operation followed a tip received by DB Wari Division, suggesting that arms had been discarded in the area — a densely populated zone with a history of criminal activity.
Background & Context:
Pallabi, known for its dense urban settlements and informal housing, has previously been flagged by law enforcement as an area requiring heightened surveillance. While no direct link has yet been established between the recovered arms and any specific group or incident, police sources suggest that such recoveries are often associated with gang activity or militant logistics.
This recovery comes amid ongoing nationwide drives against illegal arms circulation and urban crime networks. Police have urged residents to report suspicious activity and pledged continued vigilance.
