Dhaka, Oct 15 (V7N) — After roughly two and a half hours, teachers and employees of private educational institutions under the MPO ended their protest at Shahbagh intersection and marched back to the Central Shaheed Minar around 4:45 pm on Wednesday.

The protest, which began at approximately 2:30 pm, had blocked the busy intersection, causing massive traffic congestion in surrounding areas. The teachers are demanding a 20 percent rent increase, along with other allowances. The government, however, has proposed only a 10 percent increase, which the teachers have rejected.

The protest comes after tensions escalated last Sunday when police attempted to disperse a sit-in in front of the National Press Club, leading to scuffles and the use of sound grenades. Following that incident, the teachers positioned themselves at the Central Shaheed Minar, staying under the open sky on Sunday and Monday nights with plastic sheets and banners.

The MPO teachers announced that their strike and movement will continue until the government issues a formal notification addressing their demands. They also indicated that the next phase of their program will be announced from the Shaheed Minar.
