Dhaka, Mar 06 (V7N) – Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have uncovered a factory producing fake currency in the Uttara area of the capital ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, arresting two members of the gang during a raid.
According to officials, a team from Rapid Action Battalion-3 conducted the operation late Thursday (March 5) night in a residential flat in Sector 5 of Uttara, where counterfeit notes were being printed.
RAB sources said the two suspects, who are mainly students, had come to Dhaka from Feni for their studies. They recently completed their Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) from Milestone School and College.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspects claimed they were preparing to pursue higher education abroad. However, investigators say they had simultaneously become involved in the illegal production and distribution of counterfeit currency.
Law enforcement officials said the group had become active ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, a period when large amounts of cash circulate in markets, making it easier to spread fake notes.
During the raid, RAB members seized fake banknotes worth approximately Tk 26 lakh along with equipment used to print the counterfeit currency.
Authorities said further investigations are underway to identify other members of the network and possible distribution channels of the fake currency ahead of the Eid festival.
