Dhaka, Oct 02 (V7N) – The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center of the Water Development Board has issued a warning that heavy rains may trigger flooding in low-lying areas of seven districts over the next 48–72 hours.

As of 9 am on Thursday, water levels in the Gomti, Muhuri, Selonia, and Feni rivers of the Chittagong division have risen in the last 24 hours and are expected to increase further. In Feni district, the Muhuri, Selonia, and Feni rivers may flow above danger levels, causing temporary flooding in adjacent low-lying areas. Meanwhile, the Feni river in Chittagong district is expected to remain within warning levels, with short-term flooding possible, though water levels may recede by the third day.

In Rangpur division, the Teesta river has risen, while the Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers have decreased slightly but may rise again over the next three days. Temporary flooding is possible in the lower reaches of Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari districts.

In Mymensingh division, the Kangs river has decreased, while the Someshwari and Bhugai rivers remain stable. However, all three rivers may reach warning levels in Sherpur, Mymensingh, and Netrokona districts, causing temporary flooding in low-lying areas.

Coastal rivers in Barisal, Khulna, and Chittagong divisions are also experiencing higher tides, a situation expected to continue for the next two days.

The forecast also noted that a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression and is moving northwest, expected to cross the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast of India by Thursday night.

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
