Dhaka, Sep 29 (V7N) — Former acting editor of The Daily Amar Desh, Mahmudur Rahman, has been ordered to jail by a Dhaka court in connection with a conspiracy to kidnap and kill ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's son and IT advisor, Sajib Wazed Joy.

Rahman surrendered at the court of Dhaka's Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubul Haque, seeking bail on appeal. However, after a hearing, the judge denied his bail application and ordered his immediate detention.

His legal representatives, Syed Zainul Abedin Mejbah and Sheikh Shakeel Ahmed Ripon, confirmed the court's decision to the media.

In August of last year, Rahman, along with four others, was sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment by the Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court. Among those convicted was journalist Shafiq Rehman, along with Jasa leader Mohammad Ullah, Rizvi Ahmed Caesar, and Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan.

The case centres on an alleged plot to kidnap and murder Sajib Wazed Joy. It is claimed that between September 2011 and the present, high-level leaders of the BNP and its affiliates, including Jasa’s vice president Mohammad Ullah Mamun, conspired in various locations, including New York, the UK, and Bangladesh, to carry out the plan. The conspiracy was allegedly discussed in Jasa's Paltan office and elsewhere.

The case was filed by DB Police Inspector Fazlur Rahman at Paltan Model Police Station on August 3, 2015. On February 19, 2018, the police submitted formal charges against the five accused. Among those who testified in the case were 12 individuals, including Sajib Wazed Joy.

Mahmudur Rahman has faced legal challenges for several years, with 124 cases reportedly filed against him during the previous government’s tenure.
