Dhaka, Dec 02 (V7N) — Prominent political leaders Dipu Moni, Hasanul Haque Inu, Rashed Khan Menon, and Junaid Ahmed Palak were sent to jail on Monday after being arrested in connection with new cases registered at Rampura, Hatirjheel, and Shahbagh police stations.
The four leaders were presented before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in the morning. Investigating officers submitted applications to show their arrests in connection with multiple cases. These include:
Hasanul Haque Inu and Rashed Khan Menon in the 2018 Hatirjheel case involving BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's convoy and an attempted murder charge.
Hasanul Haque Inu in the Rampura murder case linked to the July mass uprising.
Dipu Moni and Junaid Ahmed Palak in the Shahbagh police murder case.
Metropolitan Magistrate Imran Ahmed accepted the petitions and ordered their arrests in the new cases, subsequently sending them to jail.
State prosecutor Omar Farooq Farooqui stated that the accused leaders provided "direct and indirect support" to violent incidents during the July and August unrest. He further noted that all four leaders had previously been remanded in connection with various cases.
The arrests and subsequent detentions have generated significant political and public attention, with supporters and critics debating the implications for the ongoing political landscape in Bangladesh.
