Dhaka, Dec 15 (V7N)- The High Court has issued a rule asking why the Anti-Corruption Commission's (ACC) inaction in investigating allegations of a $5 billion (approximately Tk60,000 crore) embezzlement from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Pabna should not be declared illegal. The rule was issued on Sunday by a bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Mubina Asaf.

Background of the Case

The rule follows a writ petition filed on September 3 by Nationalist Democratic Movement (NDM) Chairman Bobby Hajjaj. The petition seeks directions for a probe into allegations of massive corruption linked to the nuclear power plant, allegedly involving the embezzlement of funds through a Malaysian bank.

The writ also references media reports published on August 19 regarding alleged corruption involving Sheikh Hasina's family in connection with the project. A total of 14 individuals have been named as defendants in the petition.

Court's Directive

The High Court has sought an explanation from the ACC and other relevant parties regarding their inaction on the matter. The directive underscores the importance of addressing serious allegations of corruption in a project of national significance.

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, located in Pabna, is one of Bangladesh’s most ambitious infrastructure projects. It is being constructed with assistance from Russia to bolster the country's energy capacity. Allegations of corruption in such a high-profile project have raised concerns among the public and opposition parties alike.

The case has sparked significant debate about transparency and accountability in large-scale infrastructure projects in Bangladesh. The High Court's intervention is being seen as a critical step toward ensuring a fair and impartial investigation into the allegations.
