Dhaka, Feb 25 (V7N) – The first day of the review petition hearing against the death sentence of Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam in a crimes against humanity case has concluded. The Appellate Division has scheduled the next hearing for Wednesday.
A five-judge appeal bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, heard the petition on Tuesday morning. Barrister Ehsan Siddiqui began the review hearing on behalf of ATM Azharul Islam.
Defense Argument
Azhar's lawyer, Mohammad Shishir Monir, argued that the trial process did not adhere to international legal standards.
Background of the Case
- The International Crimes Tribunal sentenced ATM Azharul Islam to death on December 30, 2014, for crimes against humanity in Rangpur during the 1971 Liberation War.
- Azhar appealed against the verdict.
- On October 23, 2019, the Appellate Division upheld the death sentence.
- Azhar filed a review petition challenging the ruling.
Jamaat’s Reaction & Postponed Protest
Jamaat-e-Islami has long claimed that the verdict was politically motivated and demanded Azhar’s release. The party had announced a public protest and a voluntary arrest program for February 25. However, it later postponed these programs, citing the overall political situation.
The next hearing in the case is set for Wednesday, February 26, 2025.
