Dhaka, Aug 26 (V7N): Mufti Jashimuddin Rahmani, the leader of the Al-Qaeda-inspired militant group Ansarullah Bangla Team, now known as Ansar al Islam, was released from Kashimpur High Security Central Jail in Gazipur on Monday.
Rahmani, who was convicted in the blogger Rajib Haider murder case, was released from the jail around 11:15 am, according to Deputy Jailor Rezaul Karim of Kashimpur High Security Central Jail.
Rajib Haider was brutally hacked to death on February 15, 2013, outside his residence in Palashnagar, Pallabi, Dhaka. Following the incident, Rajib's father filed a case with Pallabi police station. Rahmani was arrested in connection with the murder on August 12, 2013, in Barguna.
In the murder case, a Dhaka court sentenced Rahmani to five years in prison. He also faced four other cases, including those under anti-terrorism and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) laws.
Deputy Jailor Karim confirmed that Rahmani was granted bail on Sunday in a case filed under the anti-terrorism act with Uttara West police station on February 6, 2008. Following the withdrawal of the remaining cases against him and after verifying the bail documents, Rahmani was released from custody.
