Ukhiya, July 23 (V7N) – Police have arrested another Rohingya individual in connection with the recent abduction and murder of Syed Nur in Ukhiya, bringing the total number of suspects in custody to three. Among the detainees are two Rohingya men and one local resident, police confirmed.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Ismail (26), son of Achiur Rahman of Ajukhaiya village in Ghumdhum Union under Naikhongchhari upazila; Rohingya national Rohmat Ullah, son of Oli Ullah; and another Rohingya identified as Ali Hossain, also known as Munia.
In addition to the arrests, police have seized a motorcycle from the Teknaf’s Whykong area, suspected to have been used in the abduction.
According to police sources, Syed Nur was abducted on the evening of July 18 by several unidentified individuals. His wife, Jobaida Begum, later filed a case with Naikhongchhari Police Station, prompting an investigation.
Following a joint operation by the Naikhongchhari Police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Syed Nur’s body was recovered on July 21 at around 4:30 PM from a remote, forested hill area in Ajukhaiya.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Naikhongchhari Police Station, Masrurul Haque, stated that a financial dispute was the motive behind the murder. “The suspects took Syed Nur deep into the Ajukhaiya hills and strangled him using plastic tape. Three individuals involved in the incident have been arrested, including two Rohingya nationals and one local resident,” he said.
Law enforcement agencies are continuing the investigation to determine whether others were involved in the killing and to ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice.
The murder has sparked renewed concern over rising violence involving cross-border communities in the border regions of Cox’s Bazar, particularly in areas close to Rohingya refugee settlements. Authorities are increasing surveillance and coordination in the region to prevent further such incidents.
