Cox's Bazar, Aug 27 (V7N) - Ahshan Ullah Bachchu, Chairman of Dhallghata Union Parishad in Maheshkhali and an Awami League leader, has been detained by the Bangladesh Navy with weapons in his possession.
The arrest occurred at around 10:30 AM on Tuesday, August 27, in the Muhurighona area of Dhallghata Union. Reports indicate that authorities recovered homemade firearms and various other equipment from Bachchu at the time of his arrest.
After news of his detention spread, local supporters of Bachchu reportedly threw bricks and stones at the Navy personnel involved. This led to injuries among several people, including journalists who were present at the scene.
Bachchu, who was re-elected as chairman on July 17, 2023, under the Awami League's boat symbol, has faced allegations of establishing an armed gang that seized control of shrimp farms and fish projects along the coast. He is also accused of occupying the only cyclone shelter in the Dhallghata coastal area.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has not yet issued a statement regarding Bachchu's arrest.
In response to inquiries, Sukanto Chakraborty, Officer-in-Charge of Maheshkhali Police Station, stated that the Bangladesh Navy is actively engaged in operations to apprehend armed criminals across various areas. No detainees have been brought to the Maheshkhali Police Station yet. Details will be provided if individuals are transferred to the station, and appropriate legal measures will be taken against those arrested.
