Rangamati, Sep 01 (V7N) - A murder case has been filed against Akbar Hossain Chowdhury, the recently former mayor of Rangamati and district Youth League president, as well as Solaiman Chowdhury, the president of the Rangamati Municipal Awami League. The case stems from a tragic incident in Rangunia, a neighboring area of Rangamati, where three people, including a child, were killed when a landslide occurred during earth excavation.

The complaint was submitted on August 27 to the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Chattogram, under Judge Kazi Shahidul Islam. The case was filed by Md. Nazim Uddin, who has alleged that the incident was related to the illegal excavation of soil. The court has accepted the case and instructed Rangunia Police Station to commence an investigation. Former Minister Hasan Mahmud, MP for Rangunia, has been named as the principal accused.

The incident took place on December 30, 2017, at around 12 PM in the Mohammadpur village of South Rajangar Union in Rangunia. During the excavation of soil on the Lelang Hill, a protected area of the Forest Department, the soil collapsed, resulting in the deaths of Md. Amir Ali (32), Didarul Alam (25), and Md. Akib (10).

The complaint alleges that the land in question was controlled by former Minister Hasan Mahmud and that the excavation was conducted under his orders. A total of 278 individuals have been listed as defendants in this case.

Since August 5, following the political upheaval, there have been no reports of BNP-Jamaat filing any cases against leaders affiliated with the Awami League in Rangamati. As a result, the filing of this murder case against former Mayor Akbar Hossain Chowdhury and influential Awami League leader Solaiman Chowdhury, coupled with the absence of cases against other prominent Awami League figures in Rangamati, has become a major topic of discussion in the region.
