Dhaka, Sept 03 (V7N): A writ petition was submitted to the High Court on Tuesday, urging the court to direct the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to investigate allegations against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and her niece Tulip Siddiq regarding the alleged embezzlement of Tk 60,000 crore from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) through Malaysian banks.
The petition was filed by Bobby Hajjaj, Chairman of the Nationalist Democratic Movement (NDM), based on reports published by various newspapers.
The petitioner's lawyer, Sahedul Azam, confirmed the filing to the press, stating that the matter would be presented before the High Court division bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Muhammad Mahbub Ul Islam for a hearing.
Fourteen individuals, including secretaries from the ministries of power, energy and mineral resources, science and technology, home affairs, ACC chairman, Sheikh Hasina, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Tulip Siddiq, and Tarique Ahmed Siddique, have been named as respondents in the writ.
Reports published and broadcasted on August 19 by different media outlets accused Hasina and her family members of embezzling Tk 60,000 crore from the RNPP project. It was alleged that the Russian state atomic energy corporation, Rosatom, which is in charge of the Rooppur project, facilitated the embezzlement through Malaysian banks, with Sajeeb Wazed Joy and Tulip Siddiq reportedly mediating the deal.
