Chilmari, Sep 27 (V7N)- A total of 197 million tons of coal imported from India has been stranded at Chilmari River Port due to an ongoing internal conflict between two owners involved in the coal importing process. The coal, brought in as a bulkhead, has been awaiting clearance since June 5, 2024, as a result of this dispute. The importing company, RK Dredging and Construction, held a press conference on Thursday, appealing for administrative intervention to resolve the issue and allow the unloading of the coal.
Speaking at the Chilmari Press Club, Masud Kabir Rana, a representative of RK Dredging and Construction, detailed the complications that arose shortly after the coal arrived at Chilmari Fakirhat Ghat. According to Rana, the bulkhead's primary owner, Anwar Hossain, obstructed the unloading of the coal due to a dispute with his tenant. As a result, the bulkhead, along with the coal, was forcibly moved to Kanchkol Ghat.
Despite following all government regulations and paying dues such as VAT, taxes, and AIT, the situation escalated when Nur Hossain, the manager of the importing company, was allegedly abducted by Anwar Hossain's associates. According to the press briefing, on September 25, Nur Hossain was bound and blindfolded, and his mobile phone was confiscated. He was later left stranded when the bulkhead became stuck in a ditch near Karaibarishal. The naval police arrived but reportedly did not offer further assistance. Nur Hossain eventually escaped with the help of locals and returned to Ramna Ghat.
The importing company has repeatedly sought help from local authorities and representatives, submitting written complaints to the Chilmari Model Police Station and the District Commissioner as early as September 15. Despite these efforts, no action has been taken by the administration, leaving the coal and the company's assets in limbo for over 11 days.
Rana called for immediate administrative action to facilitate the safe unloading of the coal and ensure that it reaches its intended destination without further delay. He emphasized that the standoff has not only affected the company but has broader implications for the local economy and industry reliant on the coal.
The company now hopes that the press conference will draw enough attention to compel authorities to intervene and resolve the conflict.
