Kurigram, Sep 28 (V7N)- Kurigram celebrated ‘Right to Information Day’ on Saturday (September 28) with various events organized by the Kurigram Conscious Citizens Committee (SANAK), inspired by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), and the district administration. The theme for this year was “New Bangladesh: I want freedom of speech, I want free access to information.”

The day’s activities kicked off with a rally and human chain on the Kurigram-Rangpur road in the Khalilganj Bazar area, organized by SANAK. Participants from different walks of life came together to raise awareness about the importance of free access to information and the freedom of speech as crucial pillars for a democratic society.

Following the rally, a discussion meeting was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room. Deputy Commissioner Nusrat Sultana presided over the meeting, where a wide range of issues concerning access to information and the role of free speech in building a ‘New Bangladesh’ were discussed.

Several notable speakers addressed the event, including Additional Deputy Commissioner Uttam Kumar Roy, Principal Mirza Nasir Uddin, SANAC President Advocate Ahsan Habib Neelu, President Samiul Haque Nantu, District Education Officer Shamsul Alam, District Information Officer Shahjahan Ali, and Joint General Secretary of Kurigram Press Club, Mahfuzar Rahman Tutor, among others.

The speakers highlighted the need for greater transparency and accountability in governance and emphasized the importance of public participation in promoting an informed and responsible citizenry. They also stressed that the right to information is essential for ensuring good governance, fighting corruption, and empowering people to actively engage in the democratic process.

The event concluded with a collective call for continued efforts to ensure the right to information and freedom of speech in every corner of Bangladesh. The district administration and SANAK reaffirmed their commitment to raising awareness about these crucial issues and working towards a more transparent and informed society.
