Kurigram, Sept 29, V7N - Continuous rainfall and water flow from the upstream of the Dharla, Dudhkumar, and Brahmaputra rivers have led to rising water levels in Kurigram. As of now, the water levels are increasing, with the Teesta River at the Kaunia rail bridge point in Rangpur district flowing 33 cm above the danger level, resulting in flooding in Rajarhat Upazila.

Several areas, including Gharialdanga, Vidyananda, Daldalia in Ulipur Upazila, and Bajra, Thetrai, Gunaigach, and Ramana in Chilmari Upazila, have been severely affected. Approximately 400 families in low-lying regions have been impacted, with 159 hectares of saplings and seasonal crops submerged, along with rural unpaved roads.

According to the Local Water Development Board, while the water levels in the Dharla, Dudhkumar, and Brahmaputra rivers have risen at various points, they are still below the danger level. Rakibul Hasan, the Executive Engineer of the Kurigram Water Development Board, indicated that there is a possibility of water levels decreasing tomorrow.Abdullah Al Mamun, Deputy Director of the Kurigram Agriculture Department, reported that the flooding has submerged 159 hectares of crops, including vegetables and other saplings, and warned that further increases in water levels could exacerbate the situation.

Attempts to reach the Rajarhat Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) and the Kurigram District Commissioner for comments were unsuccessful, as they did not respond to calls. The ongoing situation highlights the challenges faced by local communities due to the rising water levels and the potential for further flooding in the region.
