Barguna, Nov 05 (V7N) — A massive Pangasius fish weighing 12 kilograms and 200 grams became the center of attention in Patharghata’s local market on Tuesday evening, as locals gathered to see the rare and valuable catch. The fish, netted in the Bishkhali River by fisherman Nasir, is one of the largest Pangasius caught in the area in recent years.
Nasir, who cast his net in the Bishkhali River earlier in the afternoon, was astounded when he pulled in the massive fish. “I’ve never caught such a big fish in my life,” he said, expressing both joy and surprise. Excited by the unusual size of the fish, Nasir took it to the Patharghata market, hoping to make a profitable sale. Priced at 800 taka per kilogram, the fish was valued at 9,840 taka. However, potential buyers were hesitant to purchase it whole due to the high cost.
Local buyer Yusuf noted that the high price was discouraging for individual buyers in the current market. “If the fish is cut and sold by kilogram, it might be more affordable for people,” he suggested, adding that this approach could allow more locals to enjoy the rare catch.
Patharghata Upazila Fisheries Officer Hasibul Haque attributed the successful breeding season to recent conservation efforts. A 22-day fishing restriction aimed at protecting mother hilsa, which ended recently, appears to have positively impacted the river's fish population, fostering the growth of not only hilsa but also other species like Pangasius.
“Regular operations by the Department of Fisheries have contributed to increased fish breeding and production,” Haque explained. “This will greatly benefit the fishermen, as larger fish populations offer better catch opportunities.”
As of Tuesday evening, Nasir had yet to sell the prized fish, but locals remained hopeful that this rare catch would find buyers willing to appreciate its size and quality.
