Pabna, Aug 24 (V7N) – A local youth political leader was fatally stabbed and another critically injured in a violent altercation in the Islampur area of Goyeshpur Union under Pabna Sadar Upazila on Saturday night.
 
The deceased, Mehedi Masud Pavel, 35, was the joint general secretary of the Goyeshpur Union unit of the Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He was the son of the late Moslem Uddin Master and a resident of Islampur village. His political position was confirmed by Pabna district Jubo Dal convener Ilias Ahmed Himel Rana.
 
The incident occurred around 10:00 PM on August 23. According to Officer-in-Charge, (OC) Abdus Salam of Pabna Sadar Police Station, the fatal attack is believed to have stemmed from a longstanding rivalry possibly linked to local drug trade disputes.
 
Another youth, Sojib Molla alias Imran, 24, son of Abdur Sabur Molla of the same village, was also seriously injured in the attack. He was initially taken to Pabna General Hospital but later transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment due to the severity of his injuries.
 
Eyewitnesses and local sources reported that an argument broke out in the Islampur market area, escalating quickly into a violent confrontation. During the altercation, a group of men allegedly attacked Pavel and Sojib with knives. Both victims sustained critical injuries and were rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared Pavel dead upon arrival.
 
Preliminary investigations have identified at least nine suspects involved in the assault. They are residents of Islampur village and include individuals named Joni, Jewel, Nazrul, Mofiz Uddin, Moyez Uddin Pramanik, Toufiq Uddin, Ashraf Ali, Liakat, and Dulal.
 
Law enforcement officials have visited the scene and recovered Pavel’s body from the hospital for further legal procedures. Police are currently conducting operations to apprehend the accused individuals. OC Abdus Salam confirmed that a full investigation is underway to determine the exact motives and circumstances surrounding the incident.
 
The killing has sparked tension in the local community, raising concerns over the recurring influence of criminal activities and political rivalries in the area. Further details will be reported as the investigation progresses.
