Comilla, Nov 23 (V7N) — The exhumation of 24 Japanese soldiers buried at the Mainamati War Cemetery in Comilla has been successfully completed two days ahead of schedule. The operation, which began on November 13, was officially concluded on Friday around 5 p.m.

During the excavation, remains were found in 23 of the 24 graves. One grave did not yield any recoverable remains. The recovered remains are set to be transported to Japan soon. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), which manages the cemetery, oversaw the exhumation process.

Mainamati War Cemetery, located within the Comilla Cantonment, spans approximately 6 acres and serves as the final resting place for 738 soldiers from 13 countries who fought alongside the British in Burma during World War II between 1941 and 1945. The cemetery is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made during the conflict.

Notably, this is not the first exhumation at the site. In 1962, the remains of an American soldier were repatriated to the United States by relatives. With the latest exhumation, 737 soldiers' remains will continue to rest at this historic cemetery.
