Pabna, Jan 31, (V7N) — Miar Rabbil Islam Shimon, the General Secretary of the banned Pabna District Chhatra League, was arrested at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Thursday while attempting to flee the country.
The immigration police detained Shimon as he tried to leave Bangladesh. Shimon, the son of Mokarram Hossain from the Naynamati area of Pabna, has been implicated in several criminal cases, including the killing of two students in an incident on August 4, 2024.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pabna Sadar police station, Abdus Salam, confirmed the arrest and mentioned that a team had been dispatched to Dhaka to bring Shimon back to Pabna.
The August 4 incident occurred during a student protest in Pabna city, where members of the Awami League, Chhatra League, and Jubo League opened fire on students. Two students, Jahidul Islam (19) and Mahbub Hasan Niloy (14), were killed on the spot, and several others were injured. Shimon is accused in the case and has been on the run ever since. He was arrested while attempting to escape the country to avoid facing charges.
