Chattogram, Feb 09 (V7N)- Chattogram police have arrested 19 leaders and activists affiliated with the Awami League, Jubo League, and the banned Chhatra League in a special operation conducted across 16 police stations in the city.
According to a press release issued by the city's police public relations division on Sunday afternoon (February 9), the arrests were made during a 24-hour operation from 2:00 PM on Saturday to 2:00 PM on Sunday.
The detainees are accused in multiple cases, including charges of attacks on student protests and violations of the Special Powers Act and the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Md. Maidul Islam (35), Md. Zahidul Islam alias Rony (19), Shahidul Alam (27), Shamsu Alam (30), Jahangir Alam (45), Priyo Tosh Chowdhury (62), Imam Ul Haq (28), Md. Pavel (30), Md. Moniruzzaman Riyad (39), Md. Suman (29), Md. Tamjid Hossain (21), Md. Naim Gazi (21), Md. Kachir Uddin Liton (38), Ishtiaque Wasif, Russell Ahmed (38), Md. Jewel, Md. Ismail Hossain (36), Mohammad Idris (36), and Haji Md. Ibrahim Sharif (49).
A senior police official stated, "We are identifying and apprehending those responsible for creating chaos in the city. Arrests are being made based on specific allegations, and investigations are ongoing."
The police further noted that many of the arrested individuals are accused of violent activities and acts of sabotage. The operation was conducted to maintain law and order amid rising political tensions.
Law enforcement authorities have confirmed that the detainees will be presented in court following investigations. The police emphasized that the crackdown will continue to ensure stability in the city.
