Hobiganj, Feb 13, (V7N) – A clash broke out in Madhabpur’s Surma village over the management of the Urs of spiritual leader Hazrat Shah Chan Miah Chowdhury. The confrontation between two groups left at least 10 people injured. Police intervened promptly, bringing the situation under control. Tension remains in the community, and a meeting was held by the administration to restore peace.
On the morning of February 12, devotees gathered at the shrine to mark the Urs. Disagreement over who would lead the celebration led to a heated argument between the supporters of UP Chairman Parvez Hossain Chowdhury and Simon Chowdhury. This escalated into a physical altercation, with both sides throwing bricks and stones, resulting in 10 injuries, including two in critical condition.
The injured received treatment at Madhabpur Upazila Health Complex. The police assured the situation was under control, and a meeting was held in the afternoon at the office of the Upazila Executive Officer, Jahid Bin Kasem, to resolve the issue.
The dispute over the shrine’s management has persisted for the past three to four years. Hazrat Shah Chan Miah Chowdhury, a spiritual leader, has many followers across the country. His annual Urs is celebrated with large gatherings, prayers, and rituals. Despite the ongoing tension, the previous year’s Urs was completed peacefully under administrative supervision.
The incident has left the devotees disappointed, as they hoped for a peaceful celebration.
