Pabna, March 5 (V7N) - Five Awami League leaders, who were arrested in connection with a student murder and assault case, have been transferred to other jails after being involved in an altercation with fellow inmates at the Pabna district jail.
The accused, who belong to the Awami League and its affiliated organizations, were transferred to jails in Rajshahi and Naogaon as a punishment following allegations of misconduct and creating disorder within the prison.
The information was confirmed by Pabna district jail superintendent Mohammad Omar Faruk on Wednesday, March 5, in the afternoon.
Earlier, on March 4, the five leaders were moved to Rajshahi and Naogaon jails due to their inappropriate behavior and involvement in causing disturbances at the Pabna prison.
The individuals accused of the incident include Advocate Toufiq Imam Khan, the Information and Research Secretary of the Pabna District Awami League; Sheikh Lalu, a member of the Pabna District Youth League’s convening committee; Motahar Hossain Mutai, a former chairman of Goyeshpur Union Parishad and Awami League leader; Asaduzzaman Sweet, and another unnamed individual.
According to Jail Superintendent Mohammad Omar Faruk, the accused have been imprisoned in connection with the student murder and assault case. For several days, they had been displaying inappropriate behavior toward other inmates. On the afternoon of March 3, the five prisoners again engaged in improper conduct, leading to a heated argument with fellow prisoners. Eventually, they physically assaulted the other inmates.
As a result, Toufiq Imam Khan, Sheikh Lalu, and Asaduzzaman Sweet were transferred to the Rajshahi jail, while Motai and the other unnamed individual were relocated to Naogaon district jail.
Faruk also mentioned that the accused had previously exhibited unruly behavior both inside and outside of the jail, leading to the conflict with other inmates. Therefore, following the incident, they were transferred to different prisons in an effort to maintain order.
This action was taken in accordance with their disruptive conduct, which had been causing significant disorder within the facility.
