Patharghata, Mar 25 (V7N) – A 34-kilogram boll fish has been sold for an astounding 950,000 taka (approximately $8,600 USD) at the Patharghata Fisheries Landing Center in Barguna, marking a significant catch for local fishermen.
"A 34 kg boll fish was sold for 9.5 lakh taka at Barguna Patharghata Fisheries Landing Center," a local fisheries official confirmed.
The fish was caught in the deep sea by the trawler FB Saib-2, owned by Manik Mia. Initially valued at 1,210,000 taka, the fish was ultimately sold for 956,500 taka on Tuesday, March 25.
"On Tuesday (March 25) at 11 am, the 33 kg 900 gram fish, which was worth 12 lakh 10 thousand taka, was sold for 9 lakh 56 thousand 500 taka," a local fish market representative stated.
Trawler fisherman Jamal recounted the catch as a welcome relief after a series of unsuccessful fishing trips.
"Trawler Jamal said, 'The fish was caught in our net in the deep sea. I had gone to the sea six times before to fish, but I lost money all six times. This time, this fish was caught. All 15 of us fishermen were happy that the fish was caught in our net, with Eid ahead,'" a fisherman reported.
He also mentioned that initial offers for the fish were lower, but they managed to secure a higher price through a post-auction.
"Yesterday, on Monday, when we brought the fish to Patharghata Fisheries Landing for sale, a buyer said the price of the fish was 8 lakh taka. This morning, we sold the fish by post for 9 lakh 56 thousand 500 taka. These fish are not usually caught in our nets all the time," Jamal explained.
Fish buyer Mohammad Hanif of Tahira Fish highlighted the high demand for the species, particularly for its use in medicinal purposes.
"Fish buyer Mohammad Hanif of Tahira Fish said, 'There is a huge demand for this fish in the market. I bought this fish for 31,500 taka per kg. Usually such big fish are not always available. I bought this fish after talking to a buyer in Khulna and will send it to him. Usually this fish is very expensive for pillows,'" Hanif stated.
Patharghata Upazila Fisheries Officer Hasibul Haque noted the significance of the catch for local fishermen and indicated that more such catches could be expected with adherence to fishing regulations.
"Patharghata Upazila Fisheries Officer Hasibul Haque said, 'This fish is good news to be caught in the nets of fishermen. This fish has immense importance in medicine. The blockade will start after a few days if the fishermen follow our fishing laws. Then a large number of such fish will be found in the sea and rivers,'" Haque said.
The sale underscores the potential for high-value catches in the region and the economic impact on local fishing communities.
