Under the supervision of Rangamati Superintendent of Police Dr. Farhad Hossain, a police team traveled to Khulna and, with the assistance of information technology, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), and local Khulna police, successfully arrested the primary suspect, identified as Md. Jamal Hossain Molla, from his Lavanchara home.
"Under the constant supervision of Rangamati Superintendent of Police Dr. Farhad Hossain, a team of police from Rangamati went to Khulna in this clueless incident and, as per his instructions, with the help of information technology and the PBI and the police of the concerned police station, the police were able to arrest the accused within 48 hours," OC Mohammad Shahed Uddin told reporters.
Following the arrest, police conducted a search near the crime scene at the Y-bridge and recovered the knife believed to have been used to inflict fatal injuries on the victim. Local residents have reportedly demanded the harshest punishment for the perpetrator.
"Meanwhile, after the arrest, the Kotwali Police Station conducted a drive on the Y-bridge next to the murder scene and recovered the knife used to cut the vein in the leg of the victim woman. At the same time, the local public also demanded the hanging of the murderous heretic," a local news outlet reported.
The investigation began after Kotwali police, acting on information from residents in the Mohsin Colony area of Reserve Bazar in Rangamati city on Friday midnight, broke into a locked house and discovered the decomposed body of a middle-aged woman with an abnormally swollen stomach. Initial investigations confirmed the woman had been murdered, though police initially lacked leads.
"Earlier, on Friday midnight, Kotwali police, after receiving information from locals in Mohsin Colony area of Reserve Bazar in Rangamati city, broke the lock of a locked house and recovered the body of an unidentified middle-aged woman with an abnormally swollen stomach and decomposed body. At that time, the police confirmed that the woman had been murdered after conducting a preliminary investigation, but the police did not immediately find any clues to the incident," police reports indicated.
The arrested suspect, Jamal Hossain Molla, has reportedly confessed to the murder, identifying the victim as Khadija Akhter, an employee at his shop. He stated that he owed her three lakh taka, and their relationship evolved into an affair. Despite having a wife, a 20-year-old son, and a daughter-in-law, Jamal claimed the victim pressured him to marry her, leading him to plot her murder.
"Meanwhile, the arrested murderer himself confessed to the police that he had killed the woman and said that the woman was an abandoned woman and an employee of his shop. Jamal had taken three lakh taka from her. On the pretext of this money, the woman had an affair with Jamal. Even though Jamal had a 20-year-old son, his son's wife and his first wife, at one point he kept pressuring Jamal to marry her, so he planned to kill the woman," investigators revealed.
According to his confession, Jamal brought Khadija to Rangamati on the night of Eid. On April 1st, after noticing a "house for rent" sign in Mohsin Colony, Reserve Bazar, he rented a house owned by Kazi Emran Noori. Jamal allegedly first gave Khadija 20 sleeping tablets mixed with yogurt. Over the next two days, he administered another 10 tablets mixed with juice, rendering her unconscious. He then reportedly attempted to strangle her with a towel. When she did not die immediately, he allegedly cut the veins in both of her legs to ensure her death. Afterward, Jamal claimed he disposed of the knife in the river near the Y-bridge before returning to his home in Khulna.
"At one point, on the night of Eid, the woman was brought to Rangamati. Later, on April 1, after seeing the signboard for a house for rent in Mohsin Colony, Reserve Bazar, he took the woman to a rented house owned by Kazi Emran Noori. At that time, Jamal first fed the woman 20 sleeping tablets with yogurt. On the next two days, when he fed her another 10 tablets mixed with juice in the afternoon, the woman became unconscious. At that time, an attempt was made to kill the woman by putting a towel around her neck. Even then, as the life was delayed in leaving her body, the traitor Jamal cut the veins of both the legs of the victim and confirmed her death after half an hour. Then Jamal went under the nearby Y-bridge and threw the sharp knife into the river and went back to his house in Khulna," police detailed from the confession.
The victim, Khadija Akhter, was identified as the daughter of the deceased Akbar Howlader from Bagerhat district. Due to the impoverished circumstances of her family, including her brothers, Rangamati police arranged for her burial in Rangamati following the autopsy.
"The name of the murdered woman is Khadija Akhter, she is the daughter of the deceased Akbar Howlader of Ward No. 5 of Putikhali of Morelganj Police Station in Bagerhat district. The Kotwali Police Station said that since the family of the murdered woman, including her brothers, are very poor, we buried the body of the deceased in Rangamati on the initiative of the police after the autopsy," OC Mohammad Shahed Uddin explained.
OC Mohammad Shahed Uddin confirmed that a murder case has been filed by the police as the plaintiff in this incident. The swift arrest in this seemingly "clueless" case highlights the effectiveness of modern investigative techniques.
"OC Mohammad Shahed Uddin also said that the police have filed a murder case as the plaintiff in this incident," he concluded.
