Gopalganj, July 16,(V7N) – Three people lost their lives in ongoing clashes throughout Wednesday in Gopalganj, hospital sources confirmed on Wednesday evening. The deceased have been identified as Deepto Saha, Ramzan Kazi, and Emon Talukder, although further details about their identities remain unavailable.

In response to the escalating violence, authorities imposed a curfew in Gopalganj starting at 8 pm on Wednesday (July 16), which will remain in effect until 6 pm on Thursday (July 17).

The violence erupted earlier in the day when leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League and Awami League attacked the convoy of National Citizens Party (NCP) leaders at Chowringhee intersection. The attackers pelted bricks and stones from both sides, sparking repeated clashes despite efforts by police and army personnel to control the situation.

The district administration also imposed Section 144 and deployed four platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to restore order. During the attack, NCP leaders sought shelter at the district police superintendent’s office and were later evacuated safely with the assistance of security forces.

Meanwhile, protests and road blockades erupted nationwide in solidarity with the NCP, with major blockades reported at Shahbagh in Dhaka, the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Manikganj, Chittagong, and Sylhet. Protesters demanded the arrest of those responsible for the Gopalganj violence within 72 hours.

However, NCP convener Nahid Islam has called for the removal of these blockades, urging demonstrators to clear the roads and position themselves to one side of the highways while continuing their political struggle.

The situation remains tense as security forces continue efforts to maintain peace and order in Gopalganj and across the country.
