Rangamati, Chittagong Hill Tracts, APR 13 (V7N) – A special police team has taken Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Anirban Chowdhury, the head of the traffic department in Rangamati, into custody from his office at the Rangamati Police Superintendent's office earlier today. The team has reportedly departed for the capital city, Dhaka.
While police rescue authorities have confirmed the detention, they have declined to provide specific details regarding the reasons behind it. The special police team reportedly left Rangamati for Dhaka after 2:30 PM local time on Sunday.
However, Chittagong Range Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Md. Ahsan Habib Palash has shed some light on the matter, informing the media that "The investigation agency of the International Crimes Tribunal has called him. He is going to Dhaka. We are taking him there." This statement suggests that ASP Anirban Chowdhury is being taken to Dhaka for questioning by the investigative arm of the International Crimes Tribunal, which deals with cases related to war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Anirban Chowdhury joined the Bangladesh Police on June 3, 2012, through the 30th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination for police cadres. He was subsequently promoted to the rank of Additional Superintendent of Police on December 20, 2018.
Prior to his posting in Rangamati, ASP Chowdhury served in the Narsingdi District Police as Additional Superintendent of Police, joining in September 2022. Notably, he was reportedly active in Narsingdi during the anti-discrimination movement that took place in July and August of last year.
The specific reasons for the International Crimes Tribunal's interest in ASP Anirban Chowdhury remain unclear at this time. The Tribunal typically investigates and prosecutes individuals accused of serious crimes committed during the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh. The nature of the potential allegations against ASP Chowdhury has not been disclosed.
