Sunamganj, May 19 (V7N) – A Bangladeshi youth, identified as Md. Shamsu Mia (27), sustained bullet injuries after Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel opened fire at the Gamaritala Rajapara border area under Chinakandi BOP in Bishwambharpur Upazila, Sunamganj, early Sunday morning.
The injured, Shamsu Mia, son of Abdus Sattar of Rajapur village in Dhanpur union, was reportedly part of a group of five smugglers who had illegally entered Indian territory—about 150 yards inside the border—at approximately 3:45 am on May 19 to retrieve smuggled goods.
According to Lt. Colonel Zakaria Qadir, Commander of BGB Battalion-28, a curfew was in effect on the Indian side of the border when the incident occurred. BSF troops from the Rajapara camp confronted the intruders, leading to a scuffle. During the attempt to disperse them, BSF personnel opened fire, injuring Shamsu Mia in the left shoulder.
Shamsu Mia was later rescued by his relatives and taken to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital, where he received treatment. Doctors confirmed that he is now out of danger and has been discharged.
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has announced that legal action will be taken against Shamsu Mia and his companions for illegal border crossing and involvement in smuggling. Intelligence and patrolling activities have been intensified across the 90-kilometer Sunamganj border to prevent further illegal activities and possible push-ins.
The BGB has confirmed that no push-ins have occurred in the area so far, and vigilance remains high to ensure border security.
