Chattogram, June 16 (V7N) – The Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation, the Chairman of Chattogram Development Authority (CDA), and representatives from the district administration have jointly visited Patenga Sea Beach to assess the situation following the eviction of illegal establishments. Authorities have declared that Patenga Beach will remain a public, non-commercial space, accessible to all and protected from unauthorized occupation.
During the inspection, Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain emphasized the cultural and economic importance of the beach, calling it a "treasured asset of Chattogram" and a symbol of the city both nationally and internationally.
“Patenga Sea Beach is Chattogram’s identity to the world and its primary tourist destination. We must preserve its beauty at any cost. Anyone attempting to spoil it will face legal consequences,” the mayor stated.
Over 100 Illegal Structures Removed
On June 11, the city authorities launched a removal drive, demolishing hundreds of illegally constructed stalls and temporary shops that had obscured the natural beauty of the beach and obstructed pedestrian movement.
“Many had occupied spaces with chairs and makeshift shops, blocking walkways and views of the beach. Tourists couldn’t enjoy the seaside. That has changed now,” said the mayor. “We’ve cleared most of it, and the beach’s aesthetic is visible again. There’s still litter to be cleaned, and we’ll address that soon.”
No Commercial Use Allowed
CDA Chairman Engineer Nurul Karim echoed the sentiment, stating:
“Patenga Beach is a public asset. It must never be turned into a commercial zone. It should remain open to everyone—rich or poor.”
The mayor also warned against illegal extortion and criminal activity in the area, noting that any shop set up in exchange for “protection money” or under the influence of local gangs would be immediately dismantled and legal action taken.
Local Engagement for Sustainable Solutions
Mayor Shahadat Hossain also announced plans to hold meetings with local politicians, business leaders, and community members to develop a long-term solution for maintaining the beach's integrity.
“We want tourists to visit Patenga without harassment—no one should be forced to buy stale food or face intimidation. Patenga should reflect the beauty and hospitality of Chattogram,” he added.
Among those present during the inspection were Additional Deputy Commissioner Md. Kamruzzaman and CDA’s Chief Engineer Hasan Bin Shams.
