Journalists in Rajapur, Jhalakathi, form a human chain in front of Rajapur Police Station demanding justice for the brutal murder of journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin and the enactment of laws to ensure journalist safety, August 11, 2025.
Rajapur, Aug 11 (V7N) – Journalists from across print, electronic, and online media in Rajapur, Jhalakathi, formed a human chain on Monday morning demanding capital punishment for the killers of journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin, who was brutally murdered in broad daylight in Gazipur.
The protest took place around 10:30 AM in front of Rajapur Police Station, organized by the Rajapur Sammilita Jangid Samaj. Prominent local media leaders who addressed the rally included Moniruzzaman Khan, President of Rajapur Press Club; Moinul Haque Lipu, President of Rajapur Reporters Unity; Rahim Reza, President of Rajapur Journalist Club; and Mithun Chakraborty, General Secretary of the Upazila branch of the Bangladesh Mofasal Journalist Union.
In their speeches, the protestors condemned the continuing impunity for crimes against journalists and stressed that if previous cases of journalist murders had been resolved through proper legal channels, such brutal killings would not be recurring. “Since independence, numerous journalists have been murdered in Bangladesh. The lack of justice in those cases has emboldened criminals,” said one speaker.
The journalists called for the immediate arrest of not only the direct perpetrators but also those who aided or supported the killers. They urged the government to ensure that Tuhin’s murder case is transferred to a speedy trial tribunal to deliver swift justice.
They also demanded justice for past journalist killings, including the high-profile 2012 double murder of Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, whose unresolved case continues to be a source of frustration for the media community.
A key demand from the protest was the enactment of a dedicated journalist protection law, aimed at safeguarding media workers from violence, harassment, and threats in the line of duty.
The protest in Rajapur reflects a broader national concern over the safety of journalists in Bangladesh, where attacks on the press continue to raise alarm among rights organizations and civil society.
Further demonstrations are expected across the country as media professionals continue to push for justice and legislative action.
