Mongla, August 13 (V7N) — A 22-member Upazila Water Committee has been formed in Mongla under the FishNET Project, initiated by the NGO Utthan with financial support from UK International Development.
 
The committee was established on Wednesday afternoon at the Upazila Agriculture Training Center through a participatory meeting involving representatives from various professional and social groups. The session was chaired by environmental activist and former Upazila Vice Chairman Md. Nur Alam Sheikh, who was also elected as the committee’s president.
 
FishNET Project Manager Bilkis Khatun provided a detailed overview of the initiative, while Advocacy Officer Md. Mizanur Rahman explained the background and importance of the committee. He emphasized that Utthan's water committees have been active since 1980, playing a crucial role in waterlogging mitigation and government consultations.
 
Following the presentation of the committee’s constitution, members were selected through discussion and consensus. The committee includes:
 
Vice Presidents: Abdul Malek Hawlader and Shikha Halder, General Secretary: Monindranath Roy, Joint Secretary: Mitali Mondol, Organizing Secretary: Md. Nazmul Haque, Publicity & Publication Secretary: Md. Nantu Gazi, and Office Secretary: Mehedi Hasan.
 
Other members include Advocate Sarbavoum Roy, Md. Baizid Hossain, Washington Halder, Mira Roy, Dulali Sardar, Abdul Rashid Hawlader, Konika Mondol, Fatema Jannat, Farzana Khatun, Ashima Biswas, Brishti Sarkar, Masuda Akhter, and Yasmin Begum.
 
The event was moderated by FishNET Area Manager Md. Mokhleur Rahman Kamal. The newly formed committee aims to strengthen community participation in local water management, environmental conservation, and advocacy efforts.
