Rangamati, Aug 15 (V7N) – An inmate at the Rangamati District Jail, identified as Bir Bahadur (29), died on Thursday morning while being taken to Rangamati General Hospital after reportedly falling ill inside the prison. According to hospital authorities, he had already passed away before reaching the facility.

Dr. Md. Shawkat Akbar Khan, the on-duty physician at Rangamati General Hospital, confirmed the death, stating, “He was brought in from the jail, but he had already died before arrival. The body has been kept in the hospital morgue for legal formalities.”

Bir Bahadur, a resident of Patharghata area in Reserve Bazar, Rangamati town, was serving a five-year sentence for a narcotics-related conviction, along with an additional six months for a theft case. Jail Superintendent Mojibur Rahman Mojumdar said the inmate began to feel unwell in the morning and was immediately transferred to the hospital for medical attention.

"Despite our efforts, the doctors declared him dead upon arrival. The cause of death will be determined through an autopsy," the jail official added. An executive magistrate has been appointed by the district administration to oversee the post-mortem examination.

As of midday, no family members of the deceased had arrived at the hospital to claim the body, officials confirmed.

The incident has raised questions about inmate healthcare and emergency response systems within the prison. However, no signs of foul play have been reported so far, and authorities say standard procedures are being followed pending the post-mortem results.
