Mongla, Aug 18 (V7N) – A political storm is brewing in Mongla upazila after reports emerged that Motiar Rahman Moral, a long-time leader of the Awami League, has been appointed as a joint coordinator of the National Coordination Party (NCP). Despite the fall of what opposition parties call the "fascist Awami League regime," Moral is allegedly continuing to exert influence in the area through his new political affiliation.
Motiar Rahman Moral was previously the president of Ward No. 1 of the Awami League's Chandpai Union unit and a former Union Parishad member. He has been involved in Awami League politics for several decades. Local political figures claim that his inclusion in the NCP is part of an effort to safeguard illicit activities, including alleged drug and gambling operations he was reportedly linked to during the Awami League’s tenure.
Speculations are rife that Motiar Rahman Moral paid a significant sum of money to obtain his position within the NCP. Critics argue that such a move undermines the integrity of emerging opposition forces and rehabilitates elements of the old regime under a new banner.
Leaders from various political groups have voiced their objections. Emran Hossain and Shafiqul Islam Shanto, both affiliated with the municipal unit of the BNP, stated that Moral’s inclusion is nothing short of a political rehabilitation of Awami League figures. "This is a betrayal of the people’s desire for real change. We strongly protest this," they said.
Kohinur Sardar, the Nayeb-e-Ameer of the Jamaat-e-Islami’s upazila unit, commented, "If such a thing has happened, it is entirely unjustifiable."
BM Wasim Arman, a local Jubo Dal leader, added, "It is widely rumored that Motiar Rahman Moral paid hundreds of thousands of taka to secure a position in the NCP. This is essentially a backdoor for Awami League to resettle in politics under a different name."
When contacted, Motiar Rahman Moral denied the claims and abruptly ended the call, saying, "I am not part of any NCP committee."
However, NCP’s upazila-level chief coordinator Mridha Majedul Islam confirmed that the Chandpai Union coordination committee had recently been approved under his authority. He maintained a firm stance, stating, "No one from the Awami League can remain in our committees. If anyone is found to have a prior affiliation, they will be expelled within 24 hours."
This incident has triggered intense debate within local political circles, raising questions about transparency, accountability, and ideological consistency in opposition politics as the country navigates its shifting political landscape.
