Residents of Chittagong are up in arms against the Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) over its plan to cut down 46 century-old trees and flatten hill slopes to make way for a ramp of an elevated expressway. The proposed construction has sparked outrage among locals, who have vowed to escalate their protests unless the CDA reconsiders its decision.
Under the banner of Civil Society, a group of demonstrators gathered at the Tiger Pass intersection on Monday to voice their opposition to the tree-felling plan. Freedom fighter Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman, addressing the rally, criticized the move, emphasizing that preserving nature should take precedence over infrastructure development. He warned that no one would be allowed to cut down trees in the area, suggesting alternative sites for construction projects.
Speakers at the rally expressed concerns about the environmental impact of the proposed construction, likening those responsible for cutting down trees to vultures. They questioned the need for sacrificing green spaces and destroying century-old trees for development projects.
The residents recalled a past successful movement in 2021 when plans to demolish the historic Central Railway Building (CRB) for a modern hospital were thwarted after prolonged protests. They highlighted the significance of the CRB and its surrounding greenery as vital lungs for the city, where people can enjoy fresh air.
According to CDA officials, the expressway project includes 14 ramps, with two slated for construction at the Tiger Pass intersection. The CDA has sought permission from the Bangladesh Railway for land usage for the ramp construction, assuring adherence to environmental standards.
The residents remain resolute in their opposition to the project, determined to protect the city's green spaces and heritage landmarks. They pledge to continue their movement until the CDA retracts its plan and explores alternatives that preserve Chittagong's natural beauty and historical heritage.
