Chattogram, Aug 24 (V7N) - Due to increasing water levels, the Karnaphuli Hydropower Plant will open 16 spillway gates by six inches at 10:00 PM tonight. The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has issued an urgent alert for areas downstream.

The notification was sent via a letter on Saturday afternoon (August 24) from ATM Abduzzaher, the BPDB Manager, to the Chattogram Divisional Commissioner and other relevant authorities.

The warning indicates that the critical threshold is reached when Kaptai Lake's water level hits 108 feet MSL. As of 3:00 PM on Saturday, the level was at 107.66 feet, with expectations to reach 108 feet by evening.

As a result, 16 spillway gates will be opened, releasing 9,000 CFS of water. The inflow and rainfall in the lake are being monitored closely, and if the inflow increases significantly, additional gates may be opened gradually.

Currently, five units are operational, discharging 32,000 CFS of water daily.
