Rajshahi, Aug 31 (V7N) - On August 26, the water level of the Padma River in Rajshahi briefly rose by 4 cm after the gates of the Farakka Dam on the Ganges River in India’s Murshidabad and Maldah districts were fully opened. However, the water level receded within 12 hours.
 
The Rajshahi Water Development Board (WDB) reported that the water level at the Rajshahi point of the Padma River was 16.30 meters at 3 p.m. on Monday, which remained the same at 6 p.m. that day. By Thursday evening, the level had increased to 16.34 meters, but it fell back to 16.31 meters by Friday morning and at 9 a.m.
 
The danger level for this area is 18.50 meters, so the current water level is 2.19 meters below the danger threshold. The WDB has assured that there is no immediate risk of flooding.
 
Enamul Haque, a water level measurer with the Rajshahi WDB, noted that water levels are measured five times a day at the Big Kuthi point: at 6 a.m., 9 a.m., 12 p.m., 3 p.m., and 6 p.m. On Thursday evening, the level was recorded at 16.34 meters, but it decreased by 3 cm by Friday morning.
 
Executive Engineer Arifur Rahman Ankur of the Rajshahi WDB stated that the annual opening of the Farakka Dam gates is a routine occurrence and does not pose a threat. Similarly, the water level at the Panikha point in Shibganj, Chapainawabganj, where the Padma River enters, remains below the danger level. The danger level there is 22.5 meters, while the current water level is 20.50 meters.
