Dhaka, July 28 (V7N) — The Government of Bangladesh has established a new Pay Commission to formulate an updated and equitable salary structure for public sector employees under the national pay scale. The move aims to align compensation with current economic realities and inflationary pressures.

According to an official notification issued by the Finance Division on Sunday, the commission will be chaired by former Finance Secretary Zakir Ahmed Khan. The commission comprises three full-time members and nineteen part-time members.

The Finance Division has directed the newly formed commission to submit its recommendations within six months from the date of its first meeting.

The decision to form the commission was finalized during a meeting of the Advisory Council held last Thursday, presided over by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus. The formation of the commission is part of a broader initiative to reassess public remuneration in light of growing demands for wage adjustments across government sectors.

The government last restructured public sector pay in 2015 when the Eighth National Pay Scale was introduced. Since then, civil servants and employee unions have repeatedly called for a revision, citing rising living costs, growing private-sector wage disparities, and the need for performance-based incentives.

The new commission is expected to address concerns regarding salary stagnation, pay compression, and fairness between various grades and categories of employment. In addition to determining basic salaries, the commission will also consider allowances, pensions, and benefits.

The Finance Division has stated that the commission may co-opt additional part-time members or expert consultants as needed to support its work and ensure a comprehensive review process.

Public servants, including teachers, administrative officers, and health workers, are closely watching the commission’s progress, as its findings could have significant implications for future fiscal planning and employee morale in the public sector.
