Barguna, Sep 02 (V7N) - In Barguna, a businessman has been controversially implicated in an extortion case involving the general secretary of the district Awami League. Golam Kibria Pintoo, a resident of Shaheed Minar Road, has been operating a business in bricks, sand, and cement for many years.

In a recent Facebook Live session, Pintoo highlighted his plight, revealing that his mother is critically ill and his wife is also suffering from health issues, which has led to the suspension of his business activities. He has urged the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the case and expedite his release.

Pintoo also emphasized his commitment as a volunteer with the Red Crescent Barguna Unit, where he has actively participated in disaster relief efforts. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he and his team managed the washing and burial of over 18 deceased individuals. He has consistently been involved in responding to natural disasters, including Cyclone Sidr.

He further explained that in 1996, he was involved with a student wing committee of the Awami League. After supporting the rebel leader, former MP Delwar Hossain, in 2001, he faced repercussions from the Barguna district Awami League, particularly from influential figures such as the then MP Ad. Dhirendra Devnath Shombhu and district general secretary Alhaj Jahangir Kabir. This led to his estrangement from politics, with Pintoo focusing on his business and volunteer work.

On August 15, Rabiul Islam Mamun filed a case against six individuals, including district Awami League general secretary Alhaj Jahangir Kabir, accusing them of extortion. Pintoo has been named as the fifth defendant in this case.

The case involves allegations of extortion amounting to 14 lakh taka in two separate incidents from January 2016.

Barguna Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jaglul Hasan assured that any wrongful accusations will be clarified through the investigation. He emphasized his commitment to preventing any innocent person from facing unjust harassment.
