Rajshahi, Sep 08 (V7N) - In Rajshahi, a tragic incident unfolded as a Chhatra League leader and two others were brutally beaten by a mob, resulting in one death. The violence occurred during a demonstration by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, protesting the government. The three men, accused of previous attacks, were beaten and handed over to the police. One of them, Abdullah Al Masud, later succumbed to his injuries. The event took place between the afternoon and evening on Saturday.
The victims of the attack were identified as Abdullah Al Masud, a former assistant secretary of the Rajshahi University Chhatra League and a former member of the Central Committee, along with Md. Soni and Md. Kota. Masud was from Binodpur under Matihar Police Station, while Soni and Kota resided in the Panchabati area. Their ages ranged from 25 to 30 years. Soni was a day laborer, and Kota worked as a van driver.
Reports reveal that Masud had lost a leg in an attack by criminals a decade ago. His tendons had been severed at the time. Tragically, he was fatally beaten in this latest incident. On Saturday night, he was severely injured in Binodpur Bazaar and handed over to the police. Despite being taken to the hospital, he died at around 12:30 AM.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Masud Parvez of Boalia Police Station confirmed that Masud was attacked at Binodpur Bazaar due to allegations of his involvement in the August 5 violence against students and the public. Initially, a group of students took him to Matihar Police Station. However, as no case was registered against him for the August 5 incident, he was transferred to Boalia Police Station, where he was to be charged with violent activities.
According to OC Parvez, Masud sustained serious injuries from the public beating. With army assistance, he was transported to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The family may pursue legal action if they wish.
Masud was previously attacked on April 29, 2014, while on his way to class at Rajshahi University, in front of Zia Hall. The attack resulted in the amputation of his right leg below the ankle, and his left leg was also severely injured. Tendons in both his hands were cut. Members of a rival political student group were responsible for that attack.
After losing his leg, Masud used a prosthetic limb to walk. On Saturday night, his remaining leg was broken during the mob attack. While in custody at Boalia Police Station, Masud reportedly told police, "I came to Binodpur to buy medicine, brother. I used to be involved with Chhatra League, but they targeted me because of that. They cut my leg back in 2014, brother, and cut my tendons too. I haven't been involved with Chhatra League for a long time."
This incident has raised concerns about the role of law enforcement in ensuring the safety and protection of citizens.
Meanwhile, on the same day, Anti-Discrimination Student Movement leaders apprehended two youths accused of raping and murdering a female student on August 5, allegedly dumping her body in the Padma River. Despite these allegations, no official confirmation or evidence has been presented regarding the crime. The police stated they had not received any complaints from the victim's family, and the identity of the alleged victim remains unconfirmed.
Students claimed the arrested youths were members of Chhatra League who participated in the August 5 violence. The youths reportedly confessed to the rape and murder, though they later recanted, claiming their confessions were made under duress due to the beatings they received.
