Feni, Sep 12 (V7N) - Fokhru Nessa, 50, has been left homeless by the severe flooding in Feni’s Parshuram upazila. Once living happily with her family on 8 decimals of land, her house and property were destroyed by floodwaters from the Silonia River. Now, with her dreams shattered, she and her ailing husband have taken shelter in a temporary hut on a bridge.
According to reports, the Silonia River runs through the southern Jangalghona village in Chitholia union, where the bridge is located. Fokhru Nessa's house had been on the eastern side of the bridge. Her husband, Nonna Mia, is ill, and while four of her five daughters are married, her only son works as a waiter in Feni town. The floods, which began on August 20, swept away their house, belongings, and furniture, leaving nearly 500 families in the area homeless. The land on which her house stood has also eroded, leaving no trace of their former residence.
Fokhru Nessa recounted how the floodwaters began to rise on the night of August 20. By nightfall, water had reached the roof, forcing her to save her daughter and sick husband by fleeing to the Silonia bridge. The bridge’s pillars prevented some tin sheets from being washed away in the current. The next day, they built a small hut on the bridge, where they’ve been living ever since. She said, "We are barely surviving, cooking under the open sky, with no proper sanitation. I had to send my unmarried daughter to stay with others. For the past 20 days, we’ve been living on this bridge, but no help has come. Where will we go now?"
She added, "We are poor and have no money. If the government or someone can help us with funds, we will be able to rebuild our home."
Parshuram Upazila Executive Officer Afroza Habib Shapla acknowledged the damage caused by the floods, confirming that many homes were destroyed. She mentioned that the affected families were asked to submit applications, which would be forwarded to the local government ministry for assistance. Additionally, several NGOs and volunteer organizations are working on rehabilitation efforts.
