Dhaka, Jun 04 (V7N) – In a move to reduce traffic chaos and ensure safe, affordable transportation for students, electric shuttle cars have been introduced on the Dhaka University campus, bringing relief to thousands who regularly suffer due to the uncontrolled movement of battery-powered autorickshaws in the area.

Since early May, four electric shuttle cars have been operating on different routes inside the university. The fare ranges from Tk 10 to Tk 20, making the service both accessible and cost-effective for students.

“This shuttle is exclusively for Dhaka University students. Outsiders are not allowed,” said a student, praising the initiative.

Each electric car accommodates 12 to 14 passengers and is operated by a driver with the assistance of a volunteer, who is also a university student. These volunteers serve in three-hour shifts, ensuring order and coordination during rides.

Students have responded positively, citing improved comfort and safety while commuting on campus. The electric cars are seen as a cleaner, more organized alternative to traditional autorickshaws, which have been causing frequent traffic jams, fare disputes, and minor accidents around the university perimeter.

The initiative has been taken by the Green Future Foundation, a private organization that launched the service independently.

“We started with four cars and have already seen strong demand from students for more vehicles,” said Saif Jawad Sami, Public Relations Officer of the Green Future Foundation. “We are encouraged by the students’ positive feedback.”

Munshi Shams Uddin Ahmed, Acting Registrar of Dhaka University, stated, “Although this initiative hasn’t been formally launched by the university, it was in response to students’ repeated requests. If there is further demand, we will hold discussions with the organization and consider expanding the service.”

The introduction of electric shuttle cars signals a step forward in making campus transportation safer, greener, and more student-friendly.
