Chattogram, July 6 (V7N) – A total of 19 students at Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) have been suspended or fined for involvement in acts of ragging and for physically and mentally abusing fellow students. Additionally, two students have had their enrolment permanently cancelled due to misconduct and non-compliance with disciplinary proceedings.
The disciplinary actions were decided at the 13th meeting of the university's Students' Discipline Committee, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Lutfur Rahman. The university confirmed the decisions through a press release issued on Saturday, signed by Senior Deputy Director of Public Relations and Publications, Khalilur Rahman.
The committee reviewed multiple incidents of ragging, including two serious cases that occurred on August 1 and November 19, 2023, at the university’s Bir Muktijoddha Abdullah Al Noman Hall. In one case, a first-year student from the 2023–24 academic session of the Faculty of Food Science and Technology was subjected to physical and mental abuse. In another case, a student was physically assaulted in the hall’s TV room.
Following investigations, second-year student Mirza Mahfuz Hasan Akash was permanently expelled from the hall and fined Tk 10,000. Md. Jaber received a one-year hall suspension and a Tk 5,000 fine. Other students, including Md. Rashid Shabab Shuvo, Tanzim Md. Siam Iqbal, and Md. Mehedi Hasan, received six-month suspensions and were each fined Tk 3,000.
In a separate case involving ragging of eight newly enrolled students of the same academic year, Md. Touhidul Islam Shihab of the Faculty of Fisheries was permanently expelled from the hall and fined Tk 10,000. Md. Sajed-ul-Islam Sifat was suspended for six months and fined Tk 5,000, while Md. Shahedul Islam was suspended for six months and fined Tk 3,000.
Twelve other students, including Sifat Ullah Zillan, Md. Mostakim Hossain Riyad, Asif Al Hasan, Md. Elias Al Jaber, Taidul Islam Topu, Md. Abdullah Abu Said, Najmus Sadat Touhid, Abul Hasan Fahat, Md. Shah Rukh Khan, and Md. Belal Hossain, were also suspended from the hall for six months and issued warning notices.
Additionally, Md. Riazul Jannah Wasi, another second-year student of the Faculty of Fisheries, has been banned for life from entering any university residence hall.
Separate from the ragging-related incidents, two master's level students — Abhishek Nandi (Applied Chemistry and Chemical Technology) and Md. Ashikul Islam Rana (Animal Science and Nutrition) — were permanently expelled from the university for failing to respond to show-cause notices and being found guilty of gross misconduct based on inquiry committee findings.
The university stated that it maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward ragging and abuse, and will continue to take strict actions against any breach of discipline to ensure student safety and institutional integrity.
