Iris Apfel, the renowned textile expert, interior designer, and fashion icon celebrated for her distinctive style, has passed away at the age of 102. Her commercial agent, Lori Sale, confirmed her death, describing Apfel as "extraordinary." The cause of her passing was not disclosed. The news was also shared on her verified Instagram page, which just a day earlier had marked her 102nd-and-a-half birthday.

Born on August 29, 1921, Iris Apfel gained fame for her unconventional and eye-catching fashion choices, blending haute couture with oversized costume jewellery. She was often spotted sporting bold outfits, characterized by feather boas, chunky beads, bangles, and jackets adorned with intricate beadwork.

With her trademark big, round, black-rimmed glasses, bright red lipstick, and short white hair, Apfel became an unmistakable presence at fashion events. Her unique style was celebrated in museum exhibits and the documentary film "Iris," directed by Albert Maysles.

Apfel's late-in-life fame extended to social media, where she garnered millions of followers on Instagram and TikTok. Known for her witty style advice and bold fashion philosophy, she once famously said, "More is more & Less is a Bore."

Beyond her fashion influence, Apfel was an expert in textiles and antique fabrics. Alongside her husband Carl, she owned a textile manufacturing company, Old World Weavers, and undertook restoration projects, including work at the White House under six U.S. presidents.

In 2005, the Metropolitan Museum of Art honoured Apfel with a show titled "Rara Avis," recognizing her as a "rare bird" in the fashion world. Her eclectic style, blending high and low fashion, defied conventions and embodied a modern aesthetic.

Throughout her life, Apfel continued to inspire with her creativity and individuality, collaborating with brands, designing collections, and sharing her fashion wisdom. She leaves behind a lasting legacy as an icon of style and self-expression.
