DHAKA, Feb 14, (V7N): A total of 99 first-time lawmakers, including BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, have been elected in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) polls held on February 12, marking a historic return to power for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The BNP-led alliance won a landslide majority, capturing 212 out of 299 seats, while the Jamaat-led alliance secured 77, Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) won 1, and independent or other candidates clinched 7 seats. This victory gives BNP its fourth government formation after a gap of 20 years.
Among the winners are 10 second-generation leaders representing the party’s new leadership. Notable first-time MPs from BNP include:

Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh secured seats for candidates including Dhaka-4 Syed Zainul Abedin, Dhaka-5 Mohammad Kamal Hossain, Dhaka-12 Md Saiful Alam, and Dhaka-14 Barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Kasem Arman, among others.
National Citizen Party (NCP) MPs include Dhaka-11 Nahid Islam, Noakhali-6 Abdul Hannan Masud, Cumilla-4 Hasnat Abdullah, Rangpur-4 Akhtar Hossain, and others.
Islami Andolan Bangladesh secured Barguna-1, represented by Maulana Mahmudul Hossain Waliullah, while independent lawmakers won in constituencies like Kishoreganj-5, Chandpur-4, Mymensingh-1, and Dinajpur-5.
According to Cabinet Division sources, the newly elected MPs are expected to be sworn in within a day or two, officially marking the start of the BNP-led government’s term.
This historic victory underscores a generational shift in leadership while reaffirming BNP’s long-standing political influence in Bangladesh.
