With her dominance at the UK's major music awards on Saturday, rising sensation Raye broke the record for most trophies won in a single year.

The 26-year-old singer-songwriter won six honors, including album of the year for "My 21st Century Blues," song of the year for "Escapism," best artist, R&B act, and new artist.

She received advance notice of her best songwriter award.

She said "This is wild" and "overwhelming" upon accepting the Best New Artist award.
"What is happening right now?" a beaming Raye asked the O2 arena crowd in London.

"My three-year-old self would not recognize the sight she is currently witnessing." Now that I'm in charge, I'm my boss," she said.

Even before the event began, she had created history by being the first person to be nominated for seven awards in a single year.

After a stir last year, the Londoner—real name: Rachel Keen—was pitted against six other female artists in the gender-neutral best artist category out of ten selected candidates.

After the best male and female artist categories were combined for the first time the previous year, not a single female musician was shortlisted in the category in 2023.

Damian Christian, the chairman of the Brit Awards, later lamented the "disappointing lack of female representation" and attributed it to the absence of noteworthy female stars' 2022 releases that qualified.

This year, the shortlist was increased from five to ten members, which includes Raye, Little Simz, and Arlo Parks, as well as newcomers Olivia Dean and Dua Lipa.

In addition, US singer-songwriter SZA won for international artist, US indie ensemble Boygenius won for international group, and Dua Lipa won for best pop act at this year's awards.

Kylie Minogue received the Global Icon Award at the Brit Awards.

Along with Minogue, other performers on the bill included DJ Calvin Harris, Ellie Goulding, Dua Lipa, Nigerian Afrobeats musician Rema, and Raye.

Her British win comes after a challenging ascent to the top.

She created songs for well-known artists including Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, and Little Mix before becoming successful as a solo artist.

As a guest performer on dance tunes, she has also achieved popularity.

However, after signing with Polydor, she accused the label in a heartfelt internet post of not releasing her debut album due to artistic differences.

After her contract with Polydor was terminated, she achieved both critical and financial success as an independent artist.

Just over a year ago, her song "Escapism," featuring American rapper 070 Shake, became popular on TikTok and became the number-one hit in the UK.

The third single off her first album, it also reached the top 10 in 20 countries and topped the singles charts in Denmark and Ireland.

In 1977, the Brit Awards were first presented. British Phonographic Business, a trade group that represents the UK music business, is in charge of organizing the event.
