Dhaka, Dec 19 (V7N) –Nearly 400,000 pending applications for the correction of National Identity Cards (NIDs) will be resolved within the next three months, assured NID Wing Director General and Additional Secretary ASM Humayun Kabir Apu.
He made the statement while speaking to journalists at the ETI building in Agargaon on Thursday afternoon.
Humayun, who took charge as NID DG two weeks ago, recognized the challenges the wing faces in clearing the backlog of applications.
“I have just started working and have been here for two weeks. From what I have learned, one of our major issues is the inability to process pending applications,” Humayun said.
He emphasized that resolving thousands of applications within 5–10 days or even a month with limited manpower is difficult but expressed optimism about significant progress in the coming months.
“We have planned a crash program, and you will see notable improvements within the next three months. We are also taking initiatives to recruit additional manpower. We aim to resolve all 378,000 pending applications during this period, reducing opportunities for corruption,” he added.
Currently, there are over 121.8million registered voters in the country, with the NID Wing of the Election Commission (EC) regularly providing NID-related services.
However, nearly 400,000 applications have remained unresolved due to various complications.
The new Election Commission, led by AMM Nasir Uddin, began its journey on November 21, with the new EC Secretary and NID Wing Director General assuming office in early December.
