Dhaka, Jan 15 (V7N) —Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has reiterated his commitment to restoring police morale to ensure law and order.
Speaking on Wednesday during the passing-out parade of the 40th Cadet Sub-Inspector (SI) batch at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, Rajshahi, he said: “The Police Reform Commission is working to develop a politically neutral force. Restoring the morale of the police is key to maintaining law and order.”
He added: “The primary responsibilities of the police include crime prevention, safeguarding public property, and maintaining peace and stability.”
Addressing the cadet SIs, he said: “As agents of a changing society, you will play a crucial role in public service amidst Bangladesh’s evolving progress.
“The role of a sub-inspector is highly significant as you investigate 90% of criminal cases, and the delivery of justice heavily depends on police investigations.”
Earlier, the IGP distributed awards to those who excelled in various training aspects. Among them, Cadet SI Md Badiuzzaman was named Best in Academics, Cadet SI Nazrul Islam was recognized as Best in Field Activities, and Cadet SI Nayan Kumar Dhali received awards for Best Shooter and Best Swimmer. The Best Cadet award went to Cadet SI Ariful Islam for overall excellence.
A total of 480 cadet SIs, including 22 women, participated in the parade. Senior officials present included the academy’s principal, Additional IGP Masudur Rahman Bhuiyan, DIG of Rajshahi Range Alamgir Rahman, and Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Mohammad Abu Sufian.
Notably, basic training for 823 cadet SIs began on November 5, 2023, at the Bangladesh Police Academy. Following several complaints, 22 cadets were discharged shortly after training commenced.
Although the one-year training program for 801 cadets was scheduled to conclude on November 4, last year, it faced delays. Recently, in four phases, a total of 321 cadets were relieved of their duties.
These 321 cadets, dismissed for seemingly trivial reasons, are now protesting and demanding reinstatement. At midnight on Tuesday, water cannons were used to disperse the protesting cadets near the Secretariat.
