Dhaka, Jan 27 (V7N) — A total of 7,964 Bangladeshi workers have been selected as eligible to travel to Malaysia in the first phase, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The announcement came during the ministry’s weekly briefing on Monday.

These workers are part of a larger group of nearly 18,000 who were unable to travel to Malaysia by May 31 last year.

Ministry spokesperson Rafiqul Alam said that on December 5, Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Malaysia met with Malaysian Home Affairs Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to discuss the issue.

He said the meeting addressed the stranded workers and proposed the formation of a Joint Technical Group to facilitate their phased entry.

The Joint Technical Group, comprising representatives from Malaysia’s Immigration Department and the Bangladesh High Commission, held meetings on December 31 and January 14.

During these meetings, Bangladesh submitted a list of over 17,000 workers for verification. Following a detailed review, a preliminary list of 7,964 workers was finalized, enabling their entry into Malaysia in the first phase.

Efforts are ongoing to address the remaining workers in subsequent phases, the official said.
