Dhaka, Mar 13 (V7N)–Inspector General of Bangladesh Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has urged the public to allow the police to perform their duties without interference and not attack them, emphasizing that a civilized country cannot function without law enforcement.
The IGP made the call as the chief guest at a special welfare meeting at the Industrial Police-2 office in Mogorkhal (Bhogra Bypass), Gazipur Metropolitan City, on Thursday morning.
Through the journalists present, Baharul called upon the public and civil society, urging: “Allow us (the police) to do our job. Please do not attack us. We are here for the society and the country. How will stability be established in society? How will we move toward an effective election? If we cannot bring stability, we must bring stability. Why are you not letting us do our work?
“This is an irrational action. The police are not the enemy of the people. We must work for our country. We must make this happen. I earnestly request the citizens of this country—allow us to work. Tell your children and relatives that they must work for the country. Otherwise, everything will collapse.”
The police chief raised concerns over increasing attacks on police officers in various locations, particularly when they attempt to enforce the law.
He pointed out that even traffic police are being confronted for urging citizens to follow rules, reflecting a growing disregard for the law.
Baharul stressed that the perception of the police as adversaries is entirely wrong and urged the public to cooperate instead of resisting law enforcement efforts.
He said: “How can a civilized country function without the police? Where in the world does a country exist without police? Nowhere in the world does such a thing exist. The people of this country must understand this.
"Those who are intelligent already do, but some people think that the police are merely enforcing the law against them and that the police are their adversaries. If crimes are not controlled and discipline is not maintained, which citizen will be able to live peacefully? ”
The IGP also reassured industrial workers about their pending wages and Eid bonuses, stating that the government is working to ensure timely payments.
He urged workers not to believe in rumors or engage in destructive protests, as vandalism would only hurt their own workplaces.
He also sought the media's cooperation in countering misinformation.
With millions expected to travel for Eid, the IGP emphasized that different police units, including the Industrial Police, Traffic Police, GMP, and DMP, are working to ensure smooth travel.
He urged workers not to block roads in protests, as it would cause severe public inconvenience.
"Those who disrupt public order will face strict legal action," he warned.
