DHAKA, May 13, (V7N) – Jonathan Stonestreet, Senior Associate Director of the Carter Center, today held a meeting with Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, at the Commission's office located in the Parliament building in the capital.
During their discussion, Professor Riaz detailed the progress and objectives of the National Consensus Commission.
Speaking on behalf of the commission, Professor Riaz stated that a spreadsheet containing the key reform recommendations from the five Commissions has already been shared with various political parties to gather their specific feedback.
He further informed that based on the responses received, the Commission has conducted initial discussions with 32 political parties. The first phase of these discussions is nearing completion, after which the second phase will commence.
Professor Riaz emphasized the Commission's overarching goal of developing a national charter through broad consensus, which will outline the future trajectory of Bangladesh. This charter aims to contribute to the establishment of a democratic and accountable state, ensuring the rights of citizens through the implementation of a robust Anti-Corruption Commission and an independent judiciary.
Also present at the meeting were Sairah Zaidi, Associate Director of The Carter Center, and Kazi Shahidul Islam, Local Assistant Specialist.
